Puppies have some traits that are stable (just the way he is), and some that are adjustable (we can help mold them). We watch and record many traits as the puppies grow but these are the main ones we're looking at during their Puppy Evaluations around 52 days old.
Assertiveness (with humans and dogs)
Prey Drive (intensity)
Nerve Strength/ Resiliency
Touch Tolerance (compliance - not if they like it)
Around 7-8 weeks of age, we are able get a pretty accurate picture of who our puppies are and what kind of home would be best for him/her. The Badass Breeders Curriculum we use helps shape the puppy's adjustable traits. It helps create compliant puppies who don't mind being handled as well as puppies that are brave and bounce back quickly when startled. They handle new sounds and sights well because we work hard at a young age to desensitize them to things that would often frighten puppies later on in life. Its so amazing and rewarding to watch our puppies gain confidence in themselves and also trust in humans.
The Puppy Evaluation allows us to see what things your puppy still needs help with or what we should be sensitive to. It also allows us to see where your puppies talents are and the kind of home that would help them thrive. Keep an eye on our Instagram or FB pages to see how we prepare puppies with ENS/ESI, Handling exposure and stimuli activities so they are ready for the Puppy Evaluations/Temperament Tests.
We do our best to know our puppies' personalities and the needs of their new families, but this is not to say that the puppies won't change over time. With the right family, patience and training, a more reserved pup may come out of his shell and show more confidence. However, the same could be true of a fun loving and confident pup that becomes more timid after a bad interaction with a fearful dog. Continued training at home is essential for successful transition and home life!
Please keep in mind that puppies are babies and don't come preprogramed to speak English or intuitively know what their new owners want from them. Please plan ahead and be prepared for intensive and long term training. It takes time, but they are very intelligent and will learn quickly if you are consistent and patient!
